Kaniowski Tomasz (Poland)

Tomasz Kaniowski was born in 1975 in Warsaw (Poland) and graduated from the Warsaw Fine Art School and the national superior art school of Aix-en-Provence (France). Right after finishing his studies in Poland, he was given a one-year grant by the French government to study in Aix-en-Provence where he is currently based. 

Tomasz’s work is basically a non-diary of living bodies and faces, of places and moments, of cravings and obsessions that question the separation of dream and reality and the disappearance of time.

“Painting and drawing offer me a freedom that I cherish more than anything. I allow myself everything. There is something both divine and absurd in this world. I can feel it every day. I am not looking for pictures, they come to me. Some of them are deeply buried inside me, confusing me from time to time. I can't stop myself from living as if life was fiercely invading my entire soul. Body against body. I don't believe in perfection but rather in the fragility, the violence and the beauty of the instant.

Dozens of images that relentlessly glide one after another without separation and just happen to appear with no other logic behind. Unplanned meetings, stories that aren't such, stories that simply unfold and vanish. We look at faces and cities and they look back at us. The picture is both subject and object: the picture has its own presence, but it also gives life to the environment it appears in. Life streams without interruption but we only seize the living instant: a wave of moments, a wave of experiences. It starts but never ends, as long as we are here, as long as I am here: the present never dies. Dream or reality? Maybe both. There is no end in wishing to awaken and see, no end in wishing other people to see. Life is an ever-lasting experience.

He lives and works in Aix-en-Provence.
