French painter and plasticist, Séverine metraz lives and works in her homeland, High Jura.
She has exhibited in the United States, Belgium, Spain, Switzerland, Lebanon and France, and many of her works belongs to private collections.
As a humanist artist, she is passionate about mankind and its values but does not hesitate to use humor to de-dramatize themes she works on. She draw inspiration from Surrealism and Dadaism and refuses any aesthetic and political constraints. As a lover of architecture and an admirer of the works of F. Hundertwasser, she painted many cities and their inhabitant, cellular tingling. Today she continues her work of collages called the Cadavre Exquis. She is constantly experimenting this technique about paper and its endless possibilities.
Her two main themes remain religion ("Icons and Pious Images") and family ("Smala"). This last series "Smala" comes from the Arabic word "zmâla" which means a gathering of tents sheltering families ... More familiarly, it is a large group of people that lives with a person, and that accompanies her everywhere. Through this work, Séverine invents her ancestors, her roots, her DNA ... She creates her imaginary genealogical tree through these family portraits ... a very large imaginary family, a tribe, a smala!
